“Oh my, this Game of Thrones show is awful. “ –My Mother
This is how I know a good show from a bad one. My mother might have the worst taste in the history of television, and Game of Thrones is no exception. Since it is my all-time favorite show, I recommend anyone new to the series to go and start from the beginning of the first season. The show is based off of George R.R. Martin’s first novel of his bestselling fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. The television series stays true to the book, but I must admit that I prefer the show, regardless of how blasphemous that is for an English major like myself. The show fills gaps in the novel’s descriptions, making the scenes more vibrant and captivating, while the aspects that are changed are made for the better.
I have been waiting for the season three premiere for almost a year, and it completely exceeded my expectations. The episode follows Samuel Tarley, who now takes on his own point of view in the story. He is an odd character, being one of the only physically-weak characters to make a major impact thus far. Jaime Lannister’s point of view is also featured in the episode. His character is one of one of the most interesting for this book, and I am curious to see how its television counterpart will tell his story. I don’t want to spoil too much for you, but judging from this episode, it seems like the directors are starting to further themselves from the plot of the original novel by changing the chronology of events. Depending on how far they stray from the book, those who have read Martin’s series may be in for a few surprises this season.
The new episode was essentially a recap of the dramatic finish of season two, as well as a set up for the action-packed season that is soon to come. The stakes are high, and while it could be too early to tell, it seems that this season might top those which came before it. Game of Thrones continues this Sunday at 9pm est on HBO.
