Literary Crushes

It happens to everyone. You’re in the book, running around on some great adventure, then you look at him, the hero of the story…and you slowly realize that you’ve been falling for Image may be NSFW.

him all along. The experience would be terribly romantic if it was real.

Below is a list of five dashing men who are, in my opinion, well worth the read and the crush. Brace yourselves, ladies.

5. Theodore “Laurie” Laurence
From Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.
Laurie is not a terribly complicated boy. He is simply young, charming, and, unfortunately, unable to get out of the friend zone. His temper may get in the way at times, but his brains and talent on the piano are all quite endearing, making him a sweet and kind crush worth having.

4. Hareton Earnshaw
From the ever popular love/abuse story Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.
I can’t for the life of me put Heathcliff on here. I really have no idea how anyone except Cathy could love him, but perhaps this is personal preference. Either way, there is something sincerely special about Hareton in that he loses all of his mean, Heathcliff-ian ways for dear little Catherine. His wish to learn how to read so he can better himself and share things with her is rather cute. Hareton somehow managed to come out as a sweetheart in a family of jerks, so props to him.

3. Ford Prefect
From The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.
I don’t care if he’s a fictional, humanoid alien; we can work it out! Ford ranks high for being the cool, charming, intellectual type. This lad knows his universe and also has a tendency to be wonderfully hilarious. Plus, there is something quite powerful in that mischievous smile of his.

2. Fitzwilliam Darcy
From Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen.
Darcy is a living legend in the world of literary crushes. Women love him, despite his slight arrogance and terrible social awkwardness (flaws make the man). Darcy is a knowledgeable, sophisticated gentleman, and he goes to great lengths to aid the woman he loves, even if she does not love him in return. Darcy is quite the hero. Crush away.

1. Harry Potter
From the beloved Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling.
Dear Harry probably caught the heart of many a girl who grew up in the world of witches and wizards alongside him. He is brave, sporty, and generally a nice guy with a bit of a (as Hermione aptly put it) “saving-people-thing.” There are many men within this series to crush on; I know a large amount of Ron fans, Neville adorers, and Weasley twin lovers, and we can’t forget those who prefer the Byronic hero in Snape. Harry himself takes the cake for being the best friend who we all stuck with until the very end.

There are so many crushes to be had in the literary world and it’s okay to date around, so go forth, explore, and find your man.
